Question #198888

can hydrogen bonds form among hydrogen chloride moleciules,HCL? justify your answer

Expert's answer

No, hydrogen bonds cannot form among hydrogen chloride molecules. Despite its electronegativity, size of a chlorine atom is larger and hence, the electron density is low. So, HCl does not have hydrogen bonding but, HF, NH3, H2O shows hydrogen bonding.
