Solutions:

mass of chlorine = 40g

mass of sodium = X ?

molar mass of sodium = 23 g/mol

molar mass of chlorine = 35.5 g/mol

Equation of the reaction:

2Na + Cl2 ----> 2NaCl

(2 × molar mass of Na) ====== (molar mass of chlorine × 2)

(2 × 23) ====== (35.5 × 2).

So, we have:

(46 g of sodium ) ===== (71 g of chlorine)

(X g of sodium) ====== ( 40g of chlorine)

cross multiply,

we have X = (46 × 40) / (71)

X = 25.91g of sodium.

25.91g of sodium are present.
