In order to prepare the new recruits for their work, you need to produce a written report called ‘Bonding, structure and applications of chemical substances’. This should include:
• A description of how ionic and covalent bonds are formed using fully labelled hand drawn ‘dot-and-cross’ diagrams for carbon dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen, magnesium chloride, magnesium oxide, methane, oxygen, sodium chloride, sodium oxide, and water. Make sure the substances have been classified as ionic or covalent in your report.
• In your report, relate the properties, bonding and structure of one giant ionic, one giant molecular and one simple molecular substance, to their uses.
On the induction day, a simple experiment will be used as a teamwork and ‘ice-breaking’ exercise. You need to try the experiment first to get a standard set of results to be used when checking the experiments conducted by people on the induction day.
