Since the iron current in the water mainly exists as Fe3+, it is vital to, first of all, reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+. To achieve this process is by adding the reducing agent of Hydroxylamine. Therefore, an extra reducing agent is required to maintain iron in the +2 state since dissolved oxygen will re-oxidize Fe2+ to Fe3+.
