Distilled water is an hypotonic solution, if a solution of a compound,(salt for example) contained in a semi-permeable membrane, is placed in distilled water, water molecules diffuse from the weaker solution (distilled water) to the more concentrated solution of the salt. This special case of diffusion is known as "Osmosis" and in this case, since water molecules flow into the salt solution, it is referred to as "Endosmosis."
