Answer to Question #141990 in General Chemistry for Emer Lindsay

Question #141990
Consider the following acid base neutralization reaction. HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) --> NaCl(aq) + H2O(l). Using appendix C calculate the ΔHo of the reaction.
Using the ΔHo for the reaction calculate the increase in temperature of the resultant salt solution when an HCl solution is mixed with and NaOH solution. Assume the following; the combined mass of the solutions is102.4 g, the specific heat of the mixture is 1.03 cal /goC and the mass of NaCl formed is exactly 8.7 g.

ΔHo "= \u0394Hf_{Products} - \u0394Hf_{Reactants}"

ΔHo = [ΔHfNaCl(aq) + ΔHfH2O(l)] – [ΔHfHCl(aq) + ΔHfNaOH(aq)]

ΔHo = [(-407.27) + (-285.83)] – [(-167.16) + (-470.11)] = -55.83 kJ
