The gold foil experiment (or, more correctly - series of experiments) was performed under the direction of British physicist Ernest Rutherford during the 1908 - 1913 period. The actual performers of this experiment were Rutherford's colleagues Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden. That is why it is also called Geiger-Marsden experiment.
