A white solid was dissolved in water and separated into two test tubes. When the solution was boiled in the first test tube, a pungent gas was evolved, which turned moist red litmus paper blue.
Acid and a solution of ammonium orthomolybdate,(NH4)2MoO4 , were added to the second test tube, and a yellow precipitate was observed.
