An interface is a border between two or more phases existing together.

Molecules in the liquid interface are only attracted by cohesive forces with more liquid molecules which are located adjacent to or just below them. They can also create adhesive forces of attraction with molecules of other phases in the interface.

In bulk, molecules are surrounded by other molecules in all directions that have equal force of attraction.
