Answer to Question #108804 in General Chemistry for Ariana

Question #108804
Consider a disordered crystal of phosgene (COCl2) in which each trigonal planar molecule is oriented randomly in one of three possible ways. What is the entropy of the disordered state of the crystal if the crystal contains 1 mol of COCl2 molecules? (kB = 1.38 × 10-23 J/K) .

S=Boltzmans constant times ln (possible ways to the molecule #power) ie

1.1.38 X10^-23 times ln of (4 to the 39th power)

2.same for any number of molecules

3.changes when you go to mols

8.314/6.022x10^23 times ln 4 to the 6.022x10^23 power

6.022x10^23 cancels out and you are left with 8.314 times ln 4

the rest of the answers are zero because ln of 1 is 0 and 0 times anything is zero.
