Answer to Question #101858 in General Chemistry for Rudy Torres

Question #101858
You are determining the density of metal shot(irregular pieces)using liquid displacement. First you obtain the mass of an empty beaker, which is 72.403g. Then you carefully pour the metal in and find that the mass is 106.890g. When you transfer this metal to a graduated cylinder with a liquid level of 31.6mL, the liquid rises to 39.2mL. What is the density of your metal? Use the correct significant digits and units.

Mass of empty beaker=72.403g

Mass of empty beaker +metal=106.890g

Mass of metal=mass of empty beaker + metal -mass of empty beaker

Mass of metal=106.890g-72.403g =34.487g

Initial volume before metal is added =31.6ml

Final volume after metal is added = 39.2ml

Therefore, volume of metal =7.6ml which is the same as 7.6cm3

Density =mass/volume

Density =34.487g/7.6cm3 =4.538g/cm3

Density of metal = 4.538g/cm3.
