A solvent is a substance that dissolves a solute, resulting in a solution.
Applications of solvents:
Solvents are used in making Adhesives, Paint and Coatings and many Chemicals
for example:
1) Toluene which is a solvent which is Used to elevate the octane in gasoline (jet fuel); for the production of benzene and phenol; as a solvent for the processing of paints, resins, coatings, rubbers, detergents, chemicals (benzoic acid), perfumes, medicines, saccharine, etc.
2)Xylene is used primarily as a solvent for resins, lacquers, enamels, rubber, ink, leather, jet fuel; as a degreasing agent; in the production of epoxy resin; and, in the preparation of perfumes, insecticides and repellents.
3)Solvent are used in a industrial technique to separate different components from a mixture
Solvent extraction is a technique which is used as a mean of sample pre-treatment or cleanup to separate analyte from matrix components that would interfere with their detection or quantitation.
Or in simple words we can say that Solid–liquid extraction is a separation process based on the preferential dissolution of one or more of the components of a solid mixture in a liquid solvent.
