Middle lamella is an outer wall of plant cell composed of protein and pectic compounds. It is the first to form during cell division and helps plant cells to join together with other cells.
There are 3 theories on origin of middle lamella;
- It originally has been a common matrix in which the cells were imbedded; - Middle lamella is the original cell wall, laid down in common by the 2 daughter cells during cell division, and remaining distinct from the secondary thickening layers; - Middle lamella is excreted by the daughter cells into a space left between them after their formation.
