Make short notes to distinguish the characteristics of the various protozoan groups in the
specimens given
Sarcodines characteristic
· Sarcodines are distinguished by their trailing, long cytoplasm and their use of special cytoplasmic feet known as pseudopodia to facilitate movement.
· Sarcodina nutrition is heterotrophic and holozoic.
· Sarcodines reproduce asexually through binary fission or multiple fission.
· Some exhibit sexual reproduction through syngamy.
· Sarcodines can be mononucleate or multinucleate.
Mastigophora Characteristics
· They have a whip-like flagella (one or more flagella) that they use to move.
· The cytoplasm of these organisms is devoid of chloroplasts.
· The majority of dinospores have an outer armor made of cellulosic plates.
· Some species have colored pigments in place of chlorophyll (some of these pigments are neurotoxic)
· Kinetoplastids have additional nuclear DNA (Kinetoplastids)
The phylum Ciliophora has the following characteristics:
· Ciliates are found in both freshwater and saltwater environments.
· A few ciliates have symbiotic relationships.
· They move by using cilia. Ciliaire is also used to generate feeding currents in water.
· They have a tough pellicle. It maintains their fixed shapes.
· They have a distinct cytostome (mouth).
• Sixth, they have demographic nuclei, which include a larger macronucleus and one or more smaller micronuclei.
Sporozoans are characterized by
· They are single-celled organisms.
· They are immobile.
· They are parasitic in nature.
· They produce spores.
· In their life cycle, the majority of them alternate between sexual and asexual stages.
