They have three cell types: pinacocytes, mesenchyma cells, and choanocytes. They have central cavity or spongocoel. This cavity may be divided into series of branching chambers.

Sponges, like all animals, possess some sort of a skeleton that gives their bodies shape. As a whole, poriferans have diverse skeletal elements including calcareous laminae, organic filaments, and siliceous and calcareous spicules.

The water circulatory system of sponges also called as canal system is the characteristic feature of the phylum Porifera.Inside the body, the water current flows through a certain system of spaces where by the food is captured from the incoming water and the excretory material is sent out into the outgoing water.
