There has been a notable change in the roles of cortisols and corticosteroids over time among the vertebrates.

Starting with cortisols,it is a hormone produced by adrenal glands. When released into the bloodstream it works on different body parts.It further helps the body in responding to danger and stress. In addition to that, cortisol controls increase in body metabolism of glucose together with controlling blood pressure. The noted negative function of cortisol is in affecting feed efficiency ,growth rate and increased fat on carcasses.

Corticosterones on the other hand is secreted in response to challenges of the environment in vertebrates. Its role has been adapted to function in adaptation,metabolism and stress management in animals.

There are features that are less common between cortisol and corticosterone.The first one is that cortisol is endogenous adrenal steroid in most mammals including humans .Corticosteroid is different as it is the primary adrenal corticosteroid in laboratory rodents.
