Golgi bodies contribute to protein modification. Carbohydrate and lipid groups can be joined to protein molecule to form glycoproteins and lipoproteins. In addition, some functional groups of amino acids can be modified in the Golgi apparatus. In general, protein produced at the ribosomes of rough endoplasmic reticulum gets into the cavity of reticulum. There it is packed in vesicles and delivered to Golgi apparatus, where protein modification takes place. It can be represented by the following scheme:
