Can keeping animal's captive in zoo be justified in terms of preserving biodiversity?

Yes, sometimes it's the only possible way for endangered species survive, because there is too small amount of them. For example,& Elaphurus davidianus, a rare kind of deer, now lives only in zoos and disappeared in wild nature. However, all animals there should be kept in appropriate conditions.
