The main difference is that gymnosperms' ovules born open on the megasporophylls whereas angiosperms' ovules enclosed in pistils or carpels and in this way ovule is protected. This cardinal difference is included even in the terms: "gymno" is synonym to "naked, bare" and angio -& "a vessel, closed container".
