Explain the components of leaf tissue morphology – mesophyll layers (palisade, spongy) – What are the functions of these leaf parts?
Palisade refers to one or more layers of cells located directly under the epidermal cells of the adaxial leaf blade surface. The palisade mesophyll is oriented vertically and is longer than broad. Photosynthesis takes place in both palisade and spongy mesophyll.
Spongy mesophyll tissue is packed loosely for efficient gas exchange. The spongy mesophyll cells are covered by a thin layer of water. Gases dissolve in this water as they move into and out of the cells.
