Hypothalamus is a major center regulating body temperature. It will detect the drop in body temperature and modify the metabolism to increase the production of heat. First, it will stimulate the production of thyroid hormones that induce catabolic processes and increase the production of heat. Next, the brain will induce the narrowing of the blood vessels in the skin to reduce the loss of heat and preserve it inside the body. Finally, the nervous system will induce involuntary contractions of skeletal muscles (shivering) that leads will lead to the production of extra heat.
