Goats are even-toed ungulates meaning that have two main hooves on each foot. The hoof includes the distal part of the second phalanx, the distal phalanx, and the navicular bone. It is composed of the hoof wall, the bars of the hoof, the frog, the sole, and soft connective tissue. The exterior wall of the hoof contains four layers including the stratum externum, the stratum medium, the stratum internum, and the dermis parietis. The hoof wall also contains a laminar junction that binds the inner surface of the hoof wall. Hooves are important for the health of goats. They carry the weight of the animal and absorb the shock force of each step or jump, preventing damage to the joints.
