What are The similarities and differences between the 23 pairs of chromosomes??
Solution
Humans have 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes which share next similarities:
1. display the same banded pattern
2. have the same size and position of the centromere
3. carry genes for the same characteristics at corresponding loci.
But they are not identical – corresponding loci on homologous chromosomes can be occupied by different forms of a gene (different alleles). That’s because one chromosome of each homologous pair comes from the mother and one comes from the father.
Nonhomologous chromosomes have different types of genetic information, and they are probably not the same size and with the centromere in the same position.
