Using the method of distillation, a homogeneous mixture may be heated until the component that boils at the lowest temperature becomes a vapor and can be separated. Examples include sea water and wine.

A heterogeneous mixture can be separated by the filtering method. Decantation method can also be used. In this process first, the heavier particles are allowed to settle down by the process of sedimentation and then they are separated by the process of decantation. Examples of heterogeneous mixtures include Oil and water, and Orange juice with pulp
