Answer to Question #94774 in Microbiology for Mark

Question #94774
What DNA nucleotide triplet codes for codon UGU? Identify
a base-pair substitution that would produce a silent mutation
at this codon. Identify a base-pair substitution that would
result in a missense mutation at this codon. Identify a base-pair
substitution that would produce a nonsense mutation at this
codon.

DNA- ACA

RNA- UGU

Now silent mutation will occur when there is no change in the amino acid formed. UGU codes for cysteine. If it changes to UGC then still it will code for cysteine a silent mutation.

DNA- ACA

RNA- UGU

amino acid - cysteine

silent mutation-

DNA- ACG

RNA- UGC

AMINO ACID- Cysteine

Missense mutation-

DNA- ACC

RNA- UGG

amino acid- tryptophan

Nonsense mutation

DNA- ACU

RNA- UGA

AMino acid- stop codon

Dear Mark, Yes, you are correct. DNA has no uracil. In its place, thymine is present. So in DNA, the codon would be ACT and not ACU.

I thought there is no Uracil in DNA? Your DNA answer in non sense mutation has Uracil on it? Or I'm wrong?
