What is the difference between spirillum and spirochaete bacteria?

Spirillum is a type of spiral bacteria, as well as spirochete. Differences between them are in their cell wall structure and types of motility. Spirilla have rigid cell walls. Their motility is provided by flagella at one or both poles of the bacterium. Spirochetes are very thin. They have flexible cell wall. Motility of spirochetes is carried out by special structures, called axial filaments inside periplasmic space. One more difference: spirilla are Gram-negative bacteria, but spirochetes are not Gram-stained, they are stained using other methods.
