Write an essay on microbial growth and using bacterium as an example to determine the rate of population.
A population is several all the organisms of the same group or species who live in a particular habitat and are capable of interbreeding. Microbial growth means the increase in the number of cells, not an increase in the individual cell size. The growth of cells in the population is due to cell division. An increase in the number of bacteria in a population rather than in individual cells is known as the growth of bacterial cultures. The bacterium growth occurs geometrically or exponentially with each division cycle, and one cell gives rise to 2 cells, then four cells, then 8cells, then 16, then 32, then 64, and so forth. The formula for calculating the time required for the formation of generation is
G is the generation time, B is the number of bacteria present at the start of the observation, b is the number present after the period t, and n is the number of generations. The composition of the growth medium majorly controls the growth rate of bacteria. The growth rate increases up to a maximum when the medium provides a better energy source and more biosynthetic intermediates that the cell would otherwise have to make itself.
