Why some species of cocci appeared as chains but others appear in a cuboidal arrangement.

Different species of cocci divide in one or several planes. Long chains are formed when bacterial cells adhere after repeated divisions in one plane. A cuboidal arrangement of bacterial cells is formed when cocci divide in three planes and remain together.
