Erb's palsy is a form of branchial plexus palsy. The branchial plexus is a form of connected network of nerves located near the neck which gives rise to all the nerves of the arm. These nerves provide movement and feeling to the shoulder, arm and fingers.

The most affected nerves are mostly C5 - C6 nerves . These nerves form part of the brancial plexus., comprising the ventral rami of spinal nerve C6 - C8 and thoracic nerve T1.
