What is a cell-cycle checkpoint? Which check- points are emphasized in this chapter, and what does each “check” for?
A checkpoint is a stage in the eukaryotic cell cycle at which the cell examines internal and external cues and decides whether or not to move forward with division.
These checkpoints occur at the end of G1, at the G2–M transition, and during metaphase. The cell cycle is controlled at three checkpoints. Integrity of the DNA is assessed at the G1 checkpoint. Proper chromosome duplication is assessed at the G2 checkpoint.
