In meiosis, homologous chromosomes pair with each other (i.e., they form tetrads) and crossing-over occurs. In mitosis, neither of these things occur. In metaphase I of meiosis, tetrads align on the metaphase plate. In metaphase of mitosis, individual chromosomes align there.
