Scavengers are detrital feeders (detritivores). They are specialized in carrion or other animal wastes. Bottom feeders like shrimp, crab or dung beetles are typical as are vultures. Along with that, they are also reducers. This is because they break detritus into smaller fragments to expose more surface to bacteria for decay.

Decomposers are a special subset of detrital feeders, which breakdown organic compounds into inorganic forms outside their bodies, further absorbing elements needed for their nutrition.

Detritivores survive by consuming detritus for their nutrient value. Typical representatives of this category: earthworms, termites, springtails and pillbugs¹.
