Substrate-level phosphorylation is a metabolic reaction of ATP synthesis by transferring a phosphate group from a substrate to ADP.  This reaction is catalyzed by a special class of enzymes - phosphotransferases (kinase).  For example, phosphoglycerate kinase carries out this reaction in glycolysis.
