1. Symmetric self-renewing divisions:

A stem cell may self-renew symmetrically, producing two similar daughter stem cells. Symmetric self-renewing divisions are common after injury or during regeneration to replace for tissue loss.

Example:

Through symmetric divisions, juvenile/adult neural stem cells (NSCs) create offspring or self-renew.

2. Asymmetric division:

One stem cell and a more developed cell result from asymmetric division. Cell cycle determinants are segregated into just one of the two daughter cells in asymmetric cell division.

Example:

C. elegans zygote: In a sequence of asymmetric divisions, a C. elegans zygote splits asymmetrically to create one bigger blastomere destined to form ectoderm and one smaller blastomere destined to make mesoderm, endoderm, and eventually germ line.

3. Symmetric consuming division:

Symmetric divisions are defined as the formation of daughter cells with the same destiny as the parent cell. Using a symmetric consuming division, two distinct daughters are produced.

Example:

The C. elegans germ line is a notable case of symmetric stem-cell division during development. The larval nematode emerges from its eggshell with only two germline stem cells, yet these germ cells multiply to create around 2,000 progeny through the larval stage.
