Injured skin repairs itself through the following 4 stages.

The first stage involve haemostasis where the Red Blood Cells forms a clot at the injured area and stops bleeding.

The second step is the inflammation stage- the white blood cells produces macrophages that kill germs at the wound surface. In the third stage, proliferation occurs and the repair begins. The fibroblasts move to the wound area where they produce elastin and collagen. This results into connective tissue which replaces the damaged tissues. Rearrangement and remodeling of the collagen in the fourth stage causes the dermis to contract thereby closing the wound.
