Why is there a difference in timing in mitosis phases?

This can be as a result of the fact that the stages of mitosis include G1 phase, S phase and G2 phase which takes an adequate amount of time because the cell must grow sufficiently and conserve an efficient amount of energy before before it begins to divide.
