Turnover of ATP is the amount of ATP which is produced form ADP and phosphate both inside mitochondria and in the cytoplasm. Oxidative phosphorylation is the process which contributes to the formation of ATP inside mitochondria. During oxidative phosphorylation organic molecules are first oxidized in Crebs cycle, leading to formation of reduced NADH and FADH2. These molecules carry protons and electrons to the electron-transport chain, where due to different specificity of carriers to electrons and protons, proton gradient is created within the intermembrane space. Then, this gradient is used for the functioning of ATP-synthase and ATP production.
