Why Pentose Phosphate Pathway is called HMP Shunt pathway?
The pentose phosphate pathway is also called the hexose monophosphate (HMP) shunt pathway. Glucose shunted through this pathway instead of going through the glycolitic pathway, so it is known as the shunt pathway. In the glycolysis there are a few
biphosphate intermediates, but in this pathway there are monophosphates only. Hence, it is called hexose monophosphate pathway.
