What does the term Denature mean?

To denature means to destroy the characteristic properties of nucleic acids or proteins by applying an external stress (acid, base, heat etc.). It leads to the loss of quaternary, tertiary and secondary structures as weak linkages within macromolecules are being broken. This process is called denaturation.
