Question #119088

A child shivers in cold rain yet does not feel cold. What is the biochemistry behind it?

Expert's answer

Shivering produces heat because the conversion of the chemical energy of ATP into kinetic energy causes almost all of the energy to show up as heat. Hence the child does not feel cold.
