Oxaloacetate and α-ketoglutarate are products of catabolism of aspartic and glutamic acids, which are formed during the breakdown of proteins. Also, when protein is cleaved, acetyl-CoA is formed. All of these components contain a citric acid cycle at certain stages.
During fat oxidation, acetyl CoA is also formed.
In this case, gluconeogenesis can be converted to glucose.
