Question #109219

What structural characteristics are common to all the amino acids that are found in mammalian proteins?

Expert's answer

All amino acids that are incorporated into the protein (i.e. proteinogenic amino acids) are α-amino acids. Such amino acids have an amino group and a carboxylic acid group that are separated by one carbon, called the α-carbon. R-group also known as side chain of amino acid is also attached to α-carbon. Apart from glycine, which is non-chiral, all proteinogenic amino acids have L configuration.
