In physics, we believe that all matter exists only in two states - substance and field. Fields can carry energy and interact with substance and other field via forces. There are only 4 fundamental forces in nature - gravitational, electromanetic, weak and strong.
Electric field is a field that exists around all charged bodies or appears when there is non stationary magnetic field. Every interaction with this field will go via electromagnetic force.
