Question #291133

What makes up the bottom of the food chain, the base/lowest level of every ecosystem?

What would happen if this level were decimated/all organisms here died?

Expert's answer

Producers, who make their own food using photosynthesis or chemosynthesis, make up the bottom of the trophic pyramid. Primary consumers, mostly herbivores, exist at the next level, and secondary and tertiary consumers, omnivores and carnivores.

When a habitat is destroyed, the carrying capacity for indigenous plants, animals, and other organisms is reduced so that populations decline, sometimes up to the level of extinction.
